Fallen climber takes smiling photo, unaware of her serious injuries

MAGDALENA smiled for this photo because she was happy to be alive after falling from a cliff. But she had no idea how injured she really was.

The world's most bizarre tourist attractions

THOUGH bruised and bloodied, Magdalena Michalowska’s smiling face in this photo suggests nothing of the real trouble she was in.

The 41-year-old had just picked herself up after falling 15m from a rock face on Stob Garbh mountain near Stirling, Scotland on Saturday.

She took the photo as she was “just happy to be alive” after the fall.

But it wasn’t until rescuers arrived and she was flown off the mountain and taken to hospital that Ms Michalowska realised the full extent of her injuries — she had broken her neck.

The Polish woman, who lives in Glasgow, had suffered a cracked cheek, broken angle and neck vertebrae fracture, as well as severe bruising.

She said she was “surprised” by the extent of her injuries.

“I can’t move my body or neck as I’ve cracked part of my spine,” she told Deadline News, adding she had to wear a neck brace for the next six weeks.

“I was surprised because I didn’t feel a lot of pain.”

Ms Michalowska had set out with friends to climb the mighty 957m peak when the incident happened.

She said her friend Wojciech Turek were climbing a separate path to the top of the mountain when she fell.

She posted photos her friend took in the aftermath of the fall on social media to warn others about the dangers of hill walking.

“My last hill walk finished in hospital. Be careful people in the mountains,” she wrote as a caption.

She told Deadline News she smiled for the photos because she “was just happy to be alive”.

“I just try to always find something positive in every case,” she said. “I was very happy (Wojciech) was there.”

JAW-DROPPING TRAVEL PHOTOS

Holidays are times to capture memories on camera, but some travel snaps are more compelling than others. Here are the stories behind some of the most incredible ones we’ve recently seen, from the lighthearted to the tragic.

Honeymoon washout

This was the perfect honeymoon snap — but just seconds later, the newlywed’s trip was in chaos when they were washed on to rocks by a massive wave.

Ryan Dreyer could do little to help when his wife Marelize Dreyer found her leg trapped between rocks as the huge wave wrenched her from her spot, dislocating her ankle and breaking her leg in two places, on their visit to a South African beach in January.

Mrs Dreyer needed a titanium plate and 12 screws in her leg, but the couple said they wouldn’t let the unlucky incident deter them from travelling.

Close encounter

A boat full of stunned tourists got the shock of their lives when a mammoth humpback whale leapt into the air right in front of them — and the photo made it appear the whale was about to crush them.

Passionate whale watcher John Goodridge, 54, witnessed the breathtaking display from a cruise boat sailing out of Sydney Heads in July.

Mr Goodridge, who moved from Yorkshire to Australia 24 years ago, said it was one of the most spectacular breaches he had ever seen due to the proximity of the gigantic marine mammal to the people in the boat.

Smiles before tragedy

This photo was taken on a recreational boat on the Colorado River as Americans celebrated the Labor Day weekend this month.

Hours after it was uploaded on Instagram, the boat crashed into another boat filled with people enjoying their long weekend, tossing passengers into the water and causing both vessels to sink.

Nine people were injured and three people died, including Kirra Drury, who is pictured in the centre of this photo she uploaded to Instagram earlier that day.

Rescuers are still looking for her friend Raegan Heitzig, who is still missing and feared dead after the incident.
