Canadian tourist puts Australia on blast with first impression list
A tourist has delivered a brutal take-down of Australia after touching down in the country two weeks ago.
A Canadian tourist has delivered a ruthless criticism of Australia while sharing her top ten worst first impressions of the country.
Delaney Hart shared her thoughts on TikTok in a clip which has already amassed more than 60,000 views in the last 24 hours.
“OK today I wanna talk about my impressions of Australia,” she says.
“Before anybody gets upset, there’s lots of good things I have to say about Australia and frankly nowhere is only good and only bad, including Canada.”
It seems the tourist touched down in Melbourne about two weeks ago and already she has her finger to the pulse of the nation’s biggest gripes.
“I want to start with the pokies thing, I think that pokies are so weird,” she said.
“I like to gamble, I like to go play blackjack, roulette or whatever at the casino.
“I just think that pokies are a really good example of how a government can mobilise a vice to get people to think less.
“The whole thing really disgusts me to be honest.”
She then moves onto the countries “drinking” and “drug culture”, saying: “People drink so much and nobody seems to be having any fun.”
“There is no bar stools, you can’t go sit at the bar, have a beer, read a book, maybe talk to the bartender.”
She said at parties “ no one is dancing, nobody’s laughing” and if people are dancing, “they are taking their pants off”.
“I don’t understand.”
She took aim at the cost of drugs which she said is “outrageous on this island” but more pressing was the way Australians treat smoking weed as “novel”.
“To me smoking weed is like going to the store and buying a bag of M & Ms,” she said.
“It’s like you people find it fine to tie bags of wine to a clothes line but you don’t think it’s OK to smoke a joint in the park?”
The list went on to include calling the city a Central Business District rather than “downtown”, road rage, and an obsession with parking.
Self-deprecating humour made the list – as well as a follow up list focusing on her positive first impressions.
“Nobody can take a compliment, no one can compliment themselves,” she said.
Even restaurant group Merivale which includes the Coogee Pavilion, Totti’s, Mumu and Little Felix – got a shout-out for their $22 espresso martini’s.
Ms Hart wrapped up the list by saying “nobody goes on dates”.
“Australian girls ask me all the time, how do you get a date?,” she said.
“The men, I go on dates and be myself and the men are like amazed.”
“Seriously I went out in Sydney and the guy told the bartender, he couldn’t believe that I showed up.”
The comments section was largely Australians jumping to defend their country against the brutal roasting.
“You’re definitely with the wrong crowd and wrong pubs mate,” one person wrote.
“Yeah this just doesn’t sound like the Australia I’m living in hahaha no offence,” one person replied.
“I live in Australia but I’ve never been to the Australia you speak of,” another said.
Many deflected the criticism, suggesting she must be talking about Sydney which they deem a completely different world compared to the rest of the country.
“I can tell for 100% certain you’re in Sydney,” another said.
“Ha ha 100% sydney. anyone saying this isn’t ‘australia’ come to sydney cause she hit the nail on the head,” another wrote.
Ms Hart did try to redeem herself with a separate video of positive first impressions but couldn’t get the video out before the comments rolled in.
“I love it here, I have so many good things to say,” she said.
Among the list was mangoes, the ocean, walkable cities, diverse cultures and food.
