British expat divides over London list for Aussies
Aussies are known their for their chilled attitude, but if you plan on heading to the UK, it’s not going to fly, according to a British expat.
Aussies are known their for their chilled attitude, but for anyone planning a trip to the UK, it’s not going to fly, according to a British expat.
Jordana Grace, who lives in the Sunshine Coast where she is a radio host on Queensland’s 92.7 Mix FM, regularly posts about her experiences living Down Under.
But this time she’s decided to give Aussies some words of advice ahead of their trip to London – one the busiest city’s in the world.
“Here’s what you need to know to survive. You live a chilled, beach Aussie life but Londoners are quick and always on the go and hate being slowed down,” she begins before listing all the do’s and don’ts in the city.
“Always have your card or ticket ready at the ticket barrier,” she advised.
“This is not the time to be fumbling in your pocket for it. Old ladies will yell at you.”
She then unleashed the rules for escalators, saying to stand on the right and walk on the left.
“And make sure your luggage isn’t blocking the left-hand lane.”
Although, Jordana did admit it doesn’t make sense given Brits drive on the left.
The expat also joked not to talk to people or smile.
But the one thing she did say to do is head to a local pub on a Sunday for a roast.
“Go to a proper pub and get a classic ‘Sunday Roast lunch,” she said.
“And always say ‘yes’ to a Yorkshire pudding.”
Her clip has amassed over half a million views and generated plenty of comment from Aussies and Brits alike – with some divided over her tips.
“The don’t talk is false. Every visit to London once a local hears my accent they have full-blown conversations with me. Seriously the nicest people,” one Aussie wrote.
Another agreed: “Can’t relate to the ‘don’t talk’ part; just left London yesterday and everyone I met was so friendly and kind! It was wonderful.”
A third person added: “I asked a lady where Oxford St was, she didn’t look pleased but then was really nice when she realised I wasn’t from the UK.”
Meanwhile, one TikTok user said when she travelled from Devon, in southwest England, to London, a shopkeeper immediately recognised she wasn’t from the city.
“The lady in the newsagents said I can tell you are not from London … you’re smiling!” she wrote.

One Aussie said they got yelled at by an “old lady” when walking on the wrong side of the escalator in the underground.
Meanwhile, others compared Sydney and London, saying the cities are similar.
“I’m from Sydney a lot of that does apply here too,” said one, while another wrote: “London is indeed like that.”
