PASSENGERS on flights into and out of Melbourne Airport are still facing delays after a technical problem in the control tower.

Flights have resumed but airlines are yet to catch up after air traffic was slowed for safety reasons, Airservices Australia says.

It says a data fault in the digital tower technology system was detected on Monday morning.

The system has been reset and will be closely monitored on Monday afternoon, Airservices spokesman Rob Walker said.

"Safety is our number one priority and as a safety precaution, all traffic into and out of Melbourne was slowed down this morning to ensure it was appropriately managed," he said.

Staff in Airservices' national operations centre in Canberra are working with airlines to help them to return to their normal schedules as soon as possible.
