Rufus Roo flying jacket can hold 10kg worth of luggage
POCKETS are strong enough to carry a total of 10kg worth of luggage, allowing travellers to avoid carry-on fees.
IT may not be the most stylish of in-flight outfits but a new "flying jacket'' could save its wearer thousands of dollars in excess baggage fees.
The secret is its pockets - six of them strong enough to carry a total of 10kg and big enough to store as much as you'd normally able to carry in a hand luggage bag, including a laptop, wine bottles, clothes and shoes.
The jacket is the invention of British businessman Andrew Gaule, who became frustrated at seeing passengers charged large sums for excess luggage, or being forced to repack their hand luggage at the check-in counter.
This is can be especially true with budget airlines, which strictly enforce luggage limits.
Gaule, from Buckinghamshire, said the Rufus Roo polyester jacket aimed to bypass checked-luggage charges altogether.
He said that taken together with one item of hand luggage, the wearer was potentially able to double the amount they could take on board free.
It comes as a study shows that luggage charges with budget carriers have resulted in a dramatic change in the way people pack for holidays, with a quarter now either taking only hand luggage or sharing a hold bag.
The Rufus Roo jacket costs $45 and is currently only being sold online, although there are plans for it to be sold in stores soon.
