WHEN Jessie Ferguson was covered in suspected flea bites, her Perth family knew they had to get out of their Broadbeach hotel.

The bathroom was mouldy, the carpets filthy, there were only three chairs and the louvres were broken.

At $2500 for their one-week stay at the Savannah that was supposed to be rated four stars, Brad and Rosa were expecting a decent room for their family holiday.

They are not the only ones who have had a bad experience — 46 of 167 reviews on TripAdvisor are listed as terrible and it rates two and a half stars for cleanliness.

Most of the reviews mention mould problems throughout the rooms.

Mr Ferguson said his wife was in tears and it had been an awful start to what was supposed to be a fun holiday on the Coast.

The parents surprised children Cassandra, 14, Lucy, 12 and Jessie, 2, when they left Adelaide thinking they were returning to Perth.

“It was absolutely filthy,” Mr Ferguson said.

“Then we got told that’s what they’re all like.

“We had a reasonable expectation we would have a clean apartment.

“My daughter had bite marks all up her legs from playing on the carpet.

“We’re reasonable people but we didn’t even want to sleep in the bed.”

The family was offered another room but said it was in exactly the same condition.

They ended up searching for another hotel and were able to move to Solaire in Surfers Paradise, essentially losing a day from their holiday.

Manager Shawwal Khalil said their rating had been awarded by Star Rating Australia which gave them 90 per cent for cleanliness.

“With the mould growing on tiles, it’s actually ingrown mould inside the tile grout itself,” he said.

“It’s only a small percentage of mould. We’re doing some upgrades too.”

Mr Khalil said during the busy period there was not much leeway for better room changes.

A review from the weekend by a couple from Lismore said it was the dirtiest motel room they had ever been in.

“There was mould on the curtains, in the bathroom and under the surface saver on the kitchen bench tops,” the man wrote.

“There were sweat stains on the lounge chairs, stains on the pillows and the carpet was disgusting.

“We complained about the condition of one room, only to be moved to a room that was even worse.”

Several reviewers had also moved accommodation.
