New Zealand restarts quarantine free travel bubble with Victoria, SA, ACT and Tasmania
New Zealand has reopened the travel bubble with Australia, but only people from certain states will be allowed to visit.
New Zealand has reopened the quarantine-free travel bubble with Australia – but only with certain states and territories.
From 11.59pm on Sunday night, people from Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT will be allowed to travel to New Zealand without spending 14 days in isolation, provided they have not visited a Covid-19 hotspot.
The remaining states and the Northern Territory are still locked out due to recent local outbreaks of the deadly virus.
New Zealand’s Ministry of Health said all travellers eligible to fly to New Zealand would be required to take a pre-departure test within 72 hours of leaving Australia that must return a negative result.
Travellers must also have not been in Queensland, the NT or Western Australia since 10.30pm (NZ time) on June 26 and NSW after 11.59pm (NZ time) on June 22.
Those who have been in a designated hotspot within the past 14 days are not allowed to travel to New Zealand.
“We want to ensure New Zealanders are unnecessarily barred for travelling back to New Zealand where there is no risk or very low risk of Covid-19, but we will be monitoring the situation very closely,” Covid-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins said.
“South Australia, the ACT, Victoria and Tasmania are considered to have low levels of risk consistent with our green zone travel arrangements.”
Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield said the travel bubble pause would remain in place with Queensland, NT, WA and NSW until at least 11.59pm on Tuesday and would be reviewed on Monday.
New Zealand officials paused the quarantine-free travel bubble with Australia on June 26 in response to a growing number of local cases being reported across the country.
Border restrictions also remain in place across Australia as states and territories battle their own outbreaks.
Here’s the rules for those planning to travel into each jurisdiction:
VICTORIA
Travel into Victoria is banned from Greater Sydney, including Central Coast, Shellharbour, Blue Mountains and Wollongong, and the City of Brisbane, Moreton Bay and the Sunshine Coast.
Chief health officer Brett Sutton has listed the regions as red zones, meaning travel into the state is restricted to only Victorian residents, who must apply for a permit and complete 14 days self-quarantine.
Non-Victorian residents are not allowed to enter without an exception, such as a specified worker permit, transit permit, freight worker permit or exemption.
Any person who has been at a very high risk exposure site in a red zone that requires 14 days quarantine will not be allowed to enter Victoria, including Victorian residents.
The ACT and all other regions in NSW, metropolitan Perth and the Peel region in WA, Alice Springs and Greater Darwin in the Northern Territory, and Townsville, including Magnetic Island and Palm Island, and the local government areas of Ipswich, Logan and Redland within Greater Brisbane and Gold Coast, Lockyer Valley, Noosa, Scenic Rim and Somerset in southeast Queensland are orange zones.
Those travelling from a designated orange zone must apply for a permit to enter Victoria, get a Covid-19 test within 72 hours of arrival and quarantine until they get a negative result.
Residents of nominated border communities can use a photo ID as an alternative to a permit without needing to quarantine.
QUEENSLAND
Greater Sydney, Central Coast, Blue Mountains, Wollongong and Shellharbour regions of NSW have been declared hotspots by Queensland Health.
Anyone who has been to a hotspot in the last 14 days will not be allowed to enter Queensland unless they are a Queensland resident or have an exemption.
Anyone allowed to enter will need to go into hotel quarantine.
Certain regions in the NT, WA, Victoria and New Zealand have Covid-19 exposure sites listed, with those who have been to one of the venues required to complete a Queensland travel declaration, follow the health advice released by that state or territory before deciding to travel and quarantine as per the directions on the declaration.
NSW
Travellers into NSW from the Queensland local government areas of Brisbane and Moreton Bay must go directly to their place of residence and quarantine for 14 days.
No other travel restrictions apply to enter NSW, with the previous advice concerning Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory revoked.
SOUTH AUSTRALIA
Travel into South Australia has been banned from the ACT, NSW, the NT, Queensland and WA.
Essential travellers, returning South Australian residents, people genuinely relocating, and those escaping domestic violence may enter the state but will be required to self-quarantine for 14 days and get tested on days one, five and 13.
All travellers coming to SA must complete the cross border travel registration form on the SA Police website prior to their travel.
WESTERN AUSTRALIA
WA has banned travellers from NSW and Queensland without an exemption.
People coming from the ACT, NT and Victoria must complete a mandatory G2G PASS registration and declaration before travelling and quarantine for 14 days on arrival, including a test on day 11.
Travellers from South Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand must also complete a G2G PASS registration and declaration but do not need to quarantine.
TASMANIA
Tasmania has banned travel from Greater Sydney, Blue Mountains, Central Coast and Wollongong in NSW, Greater Darwin and Alice Springs in the NT and Perth and the Peel region in WA.
Travel from the Queensland local government areas of Brisbane, Gold Coast, Ipswich, Lockyer Valley, Logan City, Moreton Bay, Noosa, Palm Island Aboriginal Shire, Redlands, Scenic Rim, Somerset, Sunshine Coast and Townsville City, including Magnetic Island has also been banned.
Only those approved as an essential traveller will be allowed to enter.
People who have been to high risk exposure sites in NSW, the NT, Queensland, SA, Victoria, WA and New Zealand will also not be allowed to enter the Apple Isle.
Travellers to Tasmania, including returning residents, need to provide their contact and travel details before entering the state through the Tas e-Travel system.
ACT
Non-ACT residents who have been in the Greater Sydney, Central Coast, Blue Mountains, Wollongong and Shellharbour regions of NSW are not permitted to travel into the ACT unless they have an approved exemption.
Those travelling from Greater Melbourne, Greater Darwin and Alice Springs, and the Perth and Peel region in WA need to complete an online declaration form within 24 hours prior to arrival.
Travellers from the Queensland local government areas of Brisbane, Gold Coast, Ipswich, Lockyer Valley, Logan City, Moreton Bay, Noosa, Palm Island Aboriginal Shire, Redlands, Scenic Rim, Somerset, Sunshine Coast and Townsville City, including Magnetic Island, are also required to complete an online declaration form.
NORTHERN TERRITORY
Travellers into the NT from Greater Sydney, Blue Mountains, Central Coast and Wollongong in NSW, and the City of Brisbane and Moreton Bay in Queensland must complete 14 days of mandatory supervised quarantine at their own expense at Howard Springs or Alice Springs.
All arrivals must also fill in a border entry form.
