Drastic change to Jetstar aircraft

Jetstar has given one its planes a makeover in support of the LGBTQI+ community.

The Australian budget airline is swapping its signature orange star for a rainbow star and decorating the side of the aircraft with the words “Flying with Pride”.

The A320 will take to the skies on Wednesday with its new look ahead of the Midsumma Festival, which is held annually for 22 days over January and February in Melbourne.

Jetstar CEO Stephanie Tully said the company was “incredibly proud” to be the festival’s official airline partner for the eighth year in a row.

“There’s a seat for everyone at Jetstar, no matter how you identify, and this inclusive spirit is

now on display more publicly than ever,” she said.

Jetstar cabin crew member Skye said the plane’s makeover sent a “really strong message to LGBTQI+ staff, customers, and their allies”.

“As a transgender woman, knowing I have the support of my employer, gives me the confidence to be my authentic self at work,” she said.

“I was afraid to come out at a previous workplace. Jetstar has made me feel welcome, valued, and respected.

“Public displays of support like this pride livery helps to make sure others aren’t scared to be themselves at work.”

The new aircraft livery was unveiled at Jetstar’s engineering hangar at Melbourne Airport on Tuesday.

Drag artists Victoria Bitter, Randy Roy, and Dolly Diamond, who is celebrating her 20th anniversary of performing at Midsumma, performed at the unveiling.

Midsumma Festival CEO Karen Bryant thanked Jetstar for their support of the festival.

“Witnessing a Jetstar aircraft travelling around the country with pride livery will bring much

joy and visibility to LGBTQIA+ community members and allies,” she said.
