Hunt man for man over ‘degrading’ homophobic assault on train
Police have released an image of a man they believe can help with their inquiries after an alleged homophobic assault on a train.
An investigation has been launched after two men were victims of an alleged homophobic assault in Melbourne’s east.
On Sunday, February 9 about 4.30pm, a 30-year-old man and his boyfriend got on a city-bound train at Glen Waverley train station, according to police.
The train arrived at Syndal station, and the boyfriend got off the train, but as the train was about to depart, an unknown man approached the couple and began making homophobic and abusive comments towards them, police said.
“The train departed with the victim and the (alleged) offender still on-board,” a Victoria Police statement read.
Police allege the man assaulted the victim before getting off the train at Mount Waverley station.
A man police believe can help with their inquiries is described as caucasian, between 35-45 years old with a slim build, about 183cm tall with shoulder-length brown hair.
He was seen wearing a grey Puma T-shirt, black cargo shorts and was carrying a backpack.
“There is absolutely no place at all for degrading and homophobic behaviour in our community,” police said.
“Victoria Police is disappointed that instances of this behaviour continue to occur.”
A police spokesman said authorities were “committed to the safety and wellbeing of LGBTIQA+ communities and will continue to work closely with LGBTIQA+ communities to enhance trust and improve relationships”.
Anyone with information or footage of the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
