Horror scene as Australian woman, 39, dies in Bali tragedy
A Canberra woman who died after a snorkelling boat carrying 11 Australian tourists was capsized in Bali has been identified.
A 39-year old Australian woman has died in a tragic incident off the Indonesian island of Bali.
A boat with 13 people on board including 11 Australians capsized in waters near Denpasar on Friday evening at around 8.30pm local time.
Anna Maree, 39, from Canberra reportedly died while on a snorkelling trip.
Gabriel Hijniakoff, 29, from Brisbane, and 32-year-old Cintamani Warington, an Australian national living in Bali, were injured in the incident, reported The Daily Telegraph.
The Associated Press reported that the Sea Dragon boat was on its way to Penida island, a popular and picturesque island within easy reach of Denpasar, when the incident occurred.
Local police spokesman Agus Widiono said high waves were battering the boat.
An initial wave threw Ms Maree overboard. A second wave then tipped over the entire boat.
Nearby vessels came to help those in the water.
An image from the scene shows what appear to be tourists sitting on the upturned hull.
Ms Maree was rescued and reportedly had burns. She was taken to hospital but later died.
Two other Australians also sustained burns likely from the heat of the engine.
Another Australian woman died near the same spot just minutes into a diving expedition at Manta Point in September.
The 67-year-old woman identified by local media as Pamela Philip was at the popular diving spot near Nusa Penida.
Associated Press reports maritime accidents have killed hundreds of people in Indonesia in recent years.
Boats are often overcrowded, and safety regulations are poorly enforced. The vast archipelago country spans more than 17,000 islands with a population of 280 million, and boats are a popular and relatively cheap form of transportation.
