Delta Air Lines offers passengers in Toronto plane crash $47k each
Delta has revelaed how much it is has offered each passenger that escaped the upturned plane that crash-landed in Toronto.
Passengers on Delta flight 4819 that crash-landed and flipped upside down in Toronto have been offered $US30,000 ($47,000) each from the airline.
Four crew and 76 passengers were on board the Bombardier CRJ 900 plane, which was arriving from Minneapolis, US when it flipped on its back in harsh winter conditions at Canada’s largest airport on Monday afternoon, local time.
Fortunately, everyone managed to escape the aircraft alive.
A company spokesman told AFP that the $US30,000 to each passenger was a gesture with “no strings attached and does not affect rights”.
The payments would total $US2.28 million ($3.6 million).
There were 21 passengers who were injured and went to hospital, but only one remained hospitalised as of Wednesday morning, according to the airline.
Footage of the disastrous landing showed flames and black smoke before the aircraft flipped belly-up on the runway at Toronto Pearson International Airport.
More video footage from inside the plane then showed chaotic scenes as passengers rushed to escape through an exit.
The flight was operated by Endeavor Air, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Delta Air Lines.
Delta CEO Ed Bastian described video of the crash as “horrifying” and said he could not yet provide any details as to what went wrong.
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is investigating.
Mr Bastian vowed to “do everything we can” to support the customers, crew and their families.
He praised the crew for their response but said it was what they train for and the response is expected.
“The fact that they were able to evacuate that plane as expeditiously as they did under extreme conditions, coupled with the fact all 80 people walked off the plane with limited physical injuries was really a testament to the safety that’s embedded in the systems,” the CEO said.
Paramedic services said emergency responders dealt with various injuries among the passengers, including back sprains, head injuries, anxiety and headaches.
