Australian tourist dead after falling from hotel stairs in Thailand
An Australian man has died after tragedy struck when returning to his hotel after a night out in Phuket with his wife.
An Australian tourist has died in Thailand after it is believed he lost his footing on hotel stairs and tragically fell three floors in front of his wife, only the day before the couple were due to check out.
Sean Christopher Collins, 59, and Carla Maree Baird, 58, went for a night out on bustling tourist island Phuket before returning to their room in the early hours of May 1, Asia Pacific Press reported.
They were climbing the stairs when Mr Collins was said to have lost his footing and plunged three floors below.
The Aussie was lying facedown in a pool of blood with a severe head wound when medics arrived. They were called by hotel staff.
CPR was performed and he was taken to Patong Hospital, but sadly, Mr Collins was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police Lieutenant Wisanu Chumee, the deputy inspector at the Patong Police Station, said the incident was under investigation.
“Police went to the scene to inspect and collect CCTV footage,” he said. “The details will be investigated further.
“His wife said they went to Patong and had been drinking together.
“As they were walking back to their room, she said she saw her husband staggering before falling backwards from the second floor and landing on the basement floor.”
They returned to the hotel at about 1am on May 1, Deputy Insp. Chumee said.
“The receptionist saw them walk past. Five minutes later, staff heard a sound like someone falling from a height, so they went to investigate and found the man lying on the floor and bleeding with his wife nearby,” he said.
Hotel receptionist Aphichat Thammachat said the couple had checked in to the room on April 29 and were due to leave on May 2.
