NEWS OF THE WEEK: Kevin Hart 'could care less' about Michael Jordan feud

If you want something engaging and funny, just hire Kevin Hart.

Airline safety videos often get a bad rep for being, let’s be honest, pretty boring. But not Qatar Airways’ latest clip.

The Doha-based carrier enlisted US comedian and actor Kevin Hart to help create the “best” in-flight safety clip and according to fans and viewers, it did not disappoint.

Hart posted the video to his Instagram page less than 24 hours ago and it’s already gone viral with more than 1 million views and hundreds of comments from fans branding it “genius” and “hilarious”.

“I watched the entire thing and I’m not even planning on flying anytime soon,” one person commented.

“Best safety video,” another wrote.

While Hart, who is the airline’s global brand ambassador, is at the centre of the new video, it also features other big names such as supermodel Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, popular TikToker Khaby Lame and content creators Anwar and Amal Jibawi.

It was directed by renowned Hollywood director Tim Story (Barbershop, Fantastic Four) who really captured Hart’s hilarious and witty personality to engage passengers and keep them hooked as they are told about the airline’s safety instructions.

The clip begins with the “Qatar boss” calling Hart while he’s on a flight asking for his help in creating the “world’s best safety video”.

“You know they say these safety videos are no nonsense - how about we just call it what it is - unimaginative, uninventive and boring,” Hart says, presumably referring to direct competitor Emirates after it released a safety clip in July calling it “no-nonsense”.

As other international carriers invest in elaborate short films, the Dubai-based airline claimed it has instead saved the dancers, movie stars and singers for its in-flight entertainment because they “take your safety seriously”.

“As we continue to become more technologically advanced, we are seeing more and more passengers not paying enough attention to the in-flight safety video, instead opting for entertainment content on their other devices,” Qatar Airways Group CEO Badr Mohammed Al-Meer said.

“At Qatar Airways, the safety of our passengers and crew is our highest priority. Our main ambition for this project was to design an in-flight safety video that passengers will not want to miss.”

Meanwhile, Hart tells the “Q boss” to “leave it with me” before model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is seen assisting Hart with getting his bag in the overhead locker — a dig at the comedian’s height.

Anwar and Amal Jibawi remind him to ensure seatbelts are tightly secured and kept on throughout the flight, while Khaby Lame supports Hart doing what he does best, and Adam Waheed demonstrates how to put on an oxygen mask.

Mr Mohammed Al-Meer said they decided there was no better way to capture passengers’ attention than with their favourite celebrities and content creators.

“Shining a spotlight and amplifying this message, we are proud to welcome Kevin Hart, our latest Global Brand Ambassador, to help spread the word,” he said.

Hart also chimed in and said the safety video is “unlike anything you have seen on-board a luxury airline before”.

“I have loved partnering with Qatar Airways to produce a video that passengers will not only pay attention to but remember for a long time coming, or at least until their next flight.”

Meanwhile, in June this year the airline reclaimed the title of World’s Best Airline for 2024, in the annual Skytrax’s World Airline Awards.

It returned to the top for an unprecedented eighth time.

Qatar, a 5-star carrier, also received three other awards - World’s Best Business Class, World’s Best Business Class Airline Lounge and Best Airline in the Middle East.
