Govind Kant flew to India after losing parents to COVID-19 before he died

The final Facebook post of a Sydney father-of-two who died from COVID-19 in India has revealed the tragic reason he was in the virus-ravaged country.

Second Australian dies in India after contracting COVID

A Sydney man who died from COVID-19 in an Indian hospital had returned to his home country after his mother died, and he’d shared the tragic news on Facebook days before he flew to his death.

Sydney father-of-two Govind Kant died in a Delhi Hospital on Sunday after he contracted the virus at the end of April, just weeks after he arrived.

His mother had passed away at the end of March.

After Mr Kant arrived in India following her death, he reportedly lost his father and aunt to the virus as well.

The tragic final post to his Facebook page was a tribute to his mother on March 31 that read: “I am so sorry mummy – I was not with you.”

Tributes have been pouring in for Mr Kant, who has been remembered as a “pioneer” of the solar industry.

The company he had worked tirelessly for, Trina Solar, took to Facebook to share their “deepest condolences” to Mr Kant’s wife and two daughters.

“This is a significant loss to Trina Solar, and mere words cannot express the heartfelt sorrow we all feel upon Govind’s passing, and we will provide necessary assistance to his family in this mourning period.

“We pray his soul may rest in peace.”

It’s understood Mr Kant had been trying to return to Australia before he became ill but had been hindered by the strict arrival caps.

Mr Kant was an active member of Facebook group “Australians stuck in India” and was understood to have been trying to return home on an April 24 flight.

It’s unclear why he did not board the flight, but after Australia introduced the India travel ban on May 3, Mr Kant was prohibited from further attempts to fly home.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said Mr Kant’s death was a “terrible tragedy”.
