Five Aussie restaurants have made Elite Traveler’s annual top 100 list

IF YOU thought we were just a nation of pie eaters and dagwood dog lovers, think again. Find out which Aussie restaurants have been named among the world’s best.

WE ALWAYS knew we were a deft hand in the kitchen.

Elite Traveler magazine has released its annual list of the top 100 restaurants in the world and five Aussie establishments have made the cut.

Three Sydney and two Melbourne restaurants were named in the hotly contested list, a credit to our burgeoning food scene.

The top spot went to Alinea in Chicago for the third year in a row.

Sydney restaurant Marque in Surry Hills, run by Mark Best, took out top Aussie spot coming in at 35, followed by Melbourne chef Ben Shewry at Attica who debuted on the list for the first time at number 56. Shannon Bennett’s Vue de Monde was a close 58.

Sydney’s Tetsuya’s was next at 60 and Quay also squeezed in at number 88.

British celebrity chef, Heston Blumenthal, came out trumps securing two places on the list — his 20-year-old establishment The Fat Duck, in Berkshire, came in third and Dinner at the Mandarin Oriental hotel in London was 23rd.

In terms of the best cities in the world, London tied with Paris, boasting eight restaurants each in the top 100.

Special mention must be made to expat Aussie chef, Brett Graham, who made the top 10 at number nine for his London restaurant, The Ledbury.

Elite Traveler, a lifestyle publication aimed at wealthy jetsetters, surveyed its readers on their favourite restaurants and gourmet chefs from the past year to compile its list.
