IMAGINE running 1600km over two weeks through whiteouts and blizzards.

That's what competitors at the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in Alaska had to endure, but nature made up for the harsh conditions with a dazzling display of beauty along the way.

The annual race from Anchorage to Nome in Alaska finished today with Dallas Seavey becoming the youngest winner at just 25.

The race is the most popular sporting event in Alaska and from taking a look at the pictures, it's easy to see why.

Bright red skies light the way and footprints dotting the fresh snow are the only sign that the mushers and their dogs are not alone.
