Closed country finally reopens its borders

After more than two years of pandemic isolation, the popular tourist destination has finally opened its borders to travellers.

Japan finally reopened its borders to independent foreign travellers and reintroduced visa-free entry from October 11, 2022.

Japan has finally reopened its borders to tourists after being one of the last countries to do so following the pandemic.

As of October 11, Japan will reinstate visa-free travel to dozens of countries, ending some of world’s strictest border controls to slow the spread of Covid-19. It comes after more than two years of pandemic isolation.

So, if you are eager to head to the popular tourist destination, you are now able to enter with relatively few restrictions as the country welcomes foreign independent tourists — and not just group tours.

However, the only requirement remaining is a negative result from a Covid-19 test taken within 72 hours prior to departure, except for those who can certify that they been at least triple vaccinated, according to Japan Guide.

Children below the age of 18 who travel together with triple-vaccinated parents/guardians are also exempt from the test.

Aussies can now travel to Japan after the country finally reopened its borders as of October 11.

It’s important to note Japan recognises only certain testing and sample collection methods and requirements regarding the vaccination certificate.

This opening will provide Aussies and New Zealanders with the ability to return to the much-loved destination that attracted 520,000 Australians in 2019 alone.

In fact, since the announcement of Japan’s reopening late last month, a huge (39 per cent) of Aussies indicated that they were interested in taking the trip, according Skyscanner.

“In our latest traveller sentiment survey, 39 per cent Australians said they are looking for new cultural experiences from their next trip, and what better place than Japan to explore a truly unique culture,” Masahiro Yamazaki, Skyscanner’s Travel Expert in Tokyo said.

You need to be triple vaccinated, if not you must take Covid-19 test taken within 72 hours prior to departure – and it needs to be negative.

“The reopening comes at the perfect time for Aussies looking to get back to a much loved destination and plan seasonal ski holidays to Niseko, Hakuba or Nozawaonsen with peak ski season between December to April.”

She said travellers looking to plan travel to Japan will need to ensure they follow local Covid measures.

“Be sure to stock up on face masks, as there is an expectation these are to be worn, particularly in airports and crowded spaces,” Masahiro said.

“Social distancing is commonplace too, and expected where possible, including in restaurants, popular tourist attractions, and on public transport.”

Jetstar’s Chief Customer and Commercial Officer, Alan McIntyre said the airline has already seen strong demand.
