CRUISE ship Carnival Spirit got into the spirit of Red Nose Day today, donning a giant, glowing red nose in support of the charity.

The ship, which arrived in Sydney early this morning, was wearing the biggest ever red nose on a cruise ship at 7m wide.

Passengers, who were on an 11-day cruise of the South Pacific islands, all had a red nose waiting for them in their rooms last night to wear as they got off the ship at the Overseas Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay.

"I saw a lot of red noses," Carnival Cruise Lines spokeswoman Sophie Moll said.

"The security, boarding and port crew all got into the spirit and were all wearing red noses as well."

The rainy weather cleared briefly as the ship sailed into port around 7am.

There was a carnival-like atmosphere as they disembarked with clowns, face painters, a fire eater and unicyclist.

Passengers on the cruise also took part in fundraising activities in the lead-up to Red Nose Day, including kids colouring-in competitions and walks around the ship's outer decks.

Red Nose Day is held each year to raise funds for Australian charity SIDS and Kids, which aims to save the lives of babies and children during pregnancy, birth, infancy and childhood.

The event raises money for research, as well as education and bereavement support services for Australian families.
