A NIGHTMARE came true for two people who fell into a crocodile tank when a viewing cage collapsed in Darwin on Saturday.

The Cage of Death at Darwin's Crocosaurus Cove almost lived up to its name when one of the cables failed and it plunged into the tank with a man and woman in it, the Northern Territory News reported.

"The lady was terribly upset - you could see by her belly. She was breathing hard," said witness Linda Niehus, 45, of Leanyer.

"She looked hysterical."

She said the pair in the cage had been very lucky.

"The workers looked a bit stunned. I'd hate to think what would happen if that croc was more aggres- sive - thank God he was lazy today."

Management said the man and woman in the cage at the time were never in any danger and the cage - made of acrylic - wasn't damaged.

But witness Leah of Katherine, 27, said a foot-long piece came off the cage and the base was cracked after hitting the bottom of the tank at a 45-degree angle.

Thankfully, the croc just watched.
