Bone-chilling footage has emerged of a tourist scrambling to swim back to shore while being stalked by a crocodile in Mexico.

The tourist is lucky to be alive, thanks to an helpful observer who intervened by throwing an object at the hungry American crocodile, who was just metres away from striking in the waters of Sian Ka’an.

An object thrown into the water scares the croc away.

The croc edges closer and closer.

It is believed the crocodile is about 3 metres in length, reports Noticaribe.

Crocodiles are common in the area. According to Manual Carrera, who filmed the near-attack, the reptiles are “experts in stealing fish from fisherman” and food left by tourists.

“Unfortunately, that crocodile already associated us with food and as the video shows the boy was saved because the crocodile is well fed and chased at a pace that allowed him to reach the shore,” Mr Carrera said.

He went on to plead with tourists to stop feeding wild crocs, writing “something should be done now”.

Sian Ka’an became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
