TRAVELLERS will be able to fly direct to India's second-largest city when Air India launches flights in August.

The new route will see Air India fly a triangular service from New Delhi to Sydney and Melbourne. Using the airline's new Boeing 787 aircraft, the service will operate Delhi-Sydney-Melbourne four days a week, and Delhi-Melbourne-Sydney on the other three days. Air India has started taking bookings for the service.

India was one of the top 20 destinations for Australians last year, according to Australian Bureau of Statistics figures. It is also one of the fastest-growing destinations, with a 12 per cent rise in Australians travelling there compared with 2011.

Destination NSW will work with Air India to develop new marketing campaigns to support the launch of the new services. Air India last operated flights to Australia in 1997.
