SNOW season may be three weeks away but Mt Hotham is already whitewashed after a 20cm dumping.

Residents could wake to more than 5cm of fresh snow this morning as the wintry weather continues across Victoria.

Snow is also falling at Mt Buller with an average of 4cm a day.

Very cold temperatures are set to continue across Melbourne.

Today's minimum will drop to 10C.

Weather bureau forecaster Stephen Wood said last week's warm weather was well and truly over.

"Looking at the data, we're definitely heading into winter weather now," Mr Wood said.

He said snow would continue to fall, peaking over the weekend.

Weather forecast

Rain is also on the way. Tomorrow and Sunday should hit a 15C maximum, with rain on both days.

VicRoads has suspended work on the Great Alpine Rd over winter, allowing it to be opened from May 31, just before the snow season officially gets going on June 8.
