Torah Bright, snowboarding superstar, is shredding Aussie snow in Thredbo. Oh, and she’s still seeking a dude to rip the shirt off
Our most successful ever winter athlete Torah Bright is chilling in Thredbo. If you hate people with insanely glamorous lives, look away now.
THERE’S more to Torah Bright than meets the eye. Always has been. Behind that ever-present smile lies a woman who understands well the power of her bubbly image.
Not that there’s anything confected about Torah’s smile. Our most successful homegrown Winter Olympian smiles all day because she has the sort of life that would make anybody pretty happy.

After the Olympics in February, where she won halfpipe silver to go with her gold four years earlier, the Cooma-raised snowboarder snorkelled in Maui, surfed in Mexico, drove a few fast cars, posed next to a portrait of herself, and spent plenty time relaxing with her family.

Right now she’s in Thredbo, making the most of the best Aussie snow season in years.
“I’ve kind of been living the good life,” she said from a visibly windy Thredbo on the eve of yet another 2014 Aussie winter blizzard. “I’ve been off surfing and just enjoying summer, and now I’m back in the mountains looking for a fun-filled winter here in Thredbo.
“I love coming home to the winter. Shredding amongst the gum trees is always amazing. It’s one of the best winters ever here in Thredbo so it’s pretty amazing. The wind’s up but that means the snow is on its way.”
In recent years, cheap overseas airfares have made countries like Japan and New Zealand attractive to Australian skiers and snowboarders. Our local resorts have had to fight hard to retain business and entice new visitors. Torah’s doing her bit to help that.
“I’m so excited to be here at Thredbo to kind of put the call out. Come on down, enjoy your first winter holiday, it’s amazing here and this is the best winter yet to do it. Throw a snowball, strap on the skis, snowboard, whatever you please.”
If there’s one small thing missing from Bright’s life, it might just be the perfect bloke. In a magazine article after the Sochi Winter Olympics, Torah said she was looking for a man “so hot that I can’t help but rip his shirt off and make out”.
Naturally enough, when we caught up with Torah in Thredbo this week, we asked if she’s found that man yet.
“No, I’d have to say no,” she said. “But you know, that was all in fun and hopefully you’ve all had some laughs.”

Bright has been coy about the details of her personal life since the breakdown of her marriage with snowboarder Jake Welch in 2012. She deliberately set the media off on a wild goose chase in Sochi saying there was a new man in her life called “Hercules”.
Hercules proved to be elusive. Now it appears the shirt-ripping quote was a bit of a false lead too. This much we can confirm: Torah remains 100 per cent committed to her lifelong love of the Aussie snow, and is happy to be back in Thredbo where it all started for her.
“I’ll be up here at some events and doing some riding of my own. I’m just happy to be home and in the mountains again. You’ll see me all winter long.
