A MONSTER crocodile stalking visitors at Fogg Dam near Darwin has returned to the popular tourist haven.

The croc disappeared from the dam reserve after rangers set up traps to try and catch him four months ago. But the 4m scaly reptile was spotted again, reports the Northern Territory News.

"It was a big croc - you wouldn't want to meddle with it," Don Franklin, who spotted the croc, said.

"It was big enough to swallow a birdwatcher whole. It was just sitting on the vegetation.

Parks and Wildlife rangers have been trying to catch the big croc but it has remained elusive - despite regular helicopter surveys of the area and a trap being constantly baited with fresh meat.

The large beast has caused authorities to close the dam wall to walking for fear of an attack.

Warning signs are still in place advising people not to walk on the wall.
