Wotif reveals best finger bun, sausage roll, rooftop bar terrace and lookout in Australia
The country’s best sausage roll has been revealed with the bakery selling a few thousand a week. Are they surprised by the win? Not really.
A small bakery in Sydney has taken out a coveted award after transforming the classic finger bun into a mouth-watering gourmet treat that has Aussies lining up.
Humble Bakery in Surry Hills has taken out the award for best finger bun at Wotif’s 2024 Uniquely Aussie Awards today.
The travel app also revealed the nation’s best rooftop bar, museum, lookout point and of course the very important category of ‘best sausage roll’.
Now in its seventh year, the awards continue to celebrate the many local Aussie businesses and experiences worth travelling for.
Humble Bakery has people travelling far and wide for its famous finger bun.
Co-owner, Ben Millgate, told news.com.au it’s more of an honour than a surprise to have taken out the category for the Aussie classic.
“We’re proud of what we do and produce. It’s an honour more than a surprise,” Ben said.
“It’s cool for Wotif to create such a nostalgic award.”
He said what sets their finger bun apart is the quality of their ingredients and their commitment to using “absolutely no preservatives”.
You will also find a thick slab of butter in the centre, to top it all off.
“Our frosting is made with cream cheese, unlike most finger buns that use Boston icing. And of course, they’re made fresh daily, complete with a generous slab of butter.”
If you’re not convinced, make a trip to the bakery, according to TikTok you won’t regret it.
The social media platform is inundated with reviews of the bun, mostly scoring the treat a solid 10 out of 10 and describing it as ‘delicious’, ‘soft’ and ‘tasty’.
Meanwhile, Kenilworth Bakery in Queensland took out the country’s ‘best sausage roll’ title.
Located in a World Heritage listed building in Kenilworth, the bakery is an Aussie icon tucked away in the beautiful Sunshine Coast Hinterland.
Are they surprised they took out this important category? Not really.
“We’re stoked, but not too surprised,” owner Jenna Sanders told news.com.au.
“Our family recipe has been a winner in our kitchen for generations. It’s the secret family recipe and the fact that we bake everything fresh every single day, and you can’t go past the 1kg sausage roll challenge.”
The snack is so popular they sell a couple of thousand sausage rolls (mixture of sizes) during a standard week (not school holidays).
Over in the ‘best hotel bar’ category, it’s Brisbane’s The Terrace Rooftop Bar that took out the award.
Owned and operated by a local Brisbane couple, the Terrace Rooftop Bar is an architectural wonder not to be missed.
“We’re pleasantly surprised!” bar manager, Dan Herberg told news.com.au.
It’s an incredible honour, and we’re delighted to know that our guests love the Terrace as much as we do. Offering a 180-degree outlook, there’s simply no better place to drink in the unparalleled views.”
Meanwhile, the ‘best regional museum’ went to National Wool Museum in Geelong, Victoria, the ‘best surf club’ was awarded to Henley Surf Life Saving Club, Henley Beach South Australia and the ‘best lookout point’ went to Wineglass Bay Lookout, Freycinet in Tasmania.
“This year’s categories encompass that unique Aussie passion with the nostalgic finger bun, the classic sausage roll, stunning surf clubs and hotel bars, breathtaking lookout points and fascinating regional museums – there is something for everyone to enjoy on their next holiday,” Ms Hurley told news.com.au.
She said they received thousands of nominations from Aussies across the country and from these nominations, the Uniquely Aussie Awards winners and finalists were determined.
“Wotif’s Uniquely Aussie Awards is an annual guide to Australia’s best local gems,” she said.
