Winner of Australia’s best meat pie crowned for 2022

A road trip isn’t really complete without a pit stop to grab a meat pie. Now, the best one in the country has been revealed.

There’s no better way to get into holiday mode than with a hot meat pie mid-road trip.

But there’s also an easy way to end the meat pie high, and that’s with a dodgy pastry from the servo that even lashings of tomato sauce cannot fix.

Luckily, the annual ‘beat meat pies’ of 2022 list has revealed where to make a pie-stop on your next road trip – and with summer just around the corner, it couldn’t come at a better time.

Taking out the top gong for the best plain meat pie Down Under is from Whittlesea Bakehouse in Victoria.

The quaint bakery, which is located about one hour north of Melbourne, beat out runner’s up Four Seasons Patisserie Cafe and Bakery, in Western Australia, to take out the title.

Posting to its Facebook page, the winning bakery said it was delighted to take out the crown at The Official Great Aussie Pie Competition.

Nothing hits like a good Aussie meat pie.

Winners are grinners! The best pie in Australia has been crowned.

“The A Team has done it again! Winner of best plain pie Australia! Winners are grinners,” the bakery wrote in a post on its Facebook page.

The winners were crowned based on the pie’s general appearance, size, filling, pastry and creativity.

Speaking to the Star Weekly, the winning pie maker Adrian Caporetto said using quality ingredients was key.

“I’m a firm believer if you use good ingredients, good flour, good margarine, you keep it simple and love what you do, then that’s what counts,” he said.

The winner of the best meat pie in Australia is from Whittlesea Bakery in Victoria.

“We’re a humble little family bakery and to come out on top among the big boys is great.”

In a separate category, known as the best Gourmet Pie, the winner was awarded to Miss Amelia Gourmet, also in Victoria, for its unique take on the Chinese BBQ Pork Belly Pie.

Some of the other categories included Best Gourmet Sausage Roll taken out by Gippsland Gourmet Pies in Nambrok, Victoria, Best Plain Sausage Roll won by The Little Red Grape Bakery in Sevenhill, South Australia and the Best Vegetarian Pie by Jacks Bakery in Mandurah, Western Australia.
