TripAdvisor reveals best fine dining restaurants in Australia for 2022

TripAdvisor has announced the country’s best fine dining restaurant – and it’s not located in Sydney or Melbourne.

The best fine dining restaurants in Australia have been revealed, with Tasmania’s Wild Harvest taking out the top gong in TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice awards for 2022.

The ranking is calculated based on the quality and quantity of reviews and ratings for restaurants on TripAdvisor collected from July 1, 2021 through June 30, 2022.

Wild Harvest, located on King Island, is known for its ‘sea to table’ food, boasting some of the freshest, local produce and stunning ocean views.

It was followed by EXP. restaurant in Pokolbin, with other far-reaching eateries also dominating the list.

Melaleuca in Port Douglas came in third while Charred Kitchen & Bar in Orange, NSW came in fourth.

The only eatery from a major city to make the cut in the Top 10 was Japanese restaurant Sokyo, in Sydney which secured fifth place.

Others included Me Wah in Hobart in seventh position, The Gates Restaurant also in

Pokolbin in eighth and L’isle de France Terrigal, located on the central coast, securing ninth spot.


Margan Restaurant & Winery, from a village in the Hunter Region called Broke, came in tenth.

Unfortunately, no Aussie restaurants made the cut in the global top 25 list as part of the online travel company’s ‘Best Fine Dining Restaurants in the World’ where winners decided by an algorithm that analyses the millions of reviews and ratings collected in a year from travellers around the world.

A Michelin starred restaurant in the UK – The Old Stamp House Restaurant – nabbed the top spot for the second year running.

Inspired by the Cumbria heritage, the restaurant is known for its locally rare breed meats and foraged goods.

It lies in the picturesque town of Ambleside and is housed in the former office of the Romantic poet William Wordsworth.

Oro Restaurante in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, came in second, with Madonnina del Pescatore in the Italian seaside town of Senigallia and Spain’s Martin Berasategui coming in third and fourth respectively.

Meanwhile, Gourmet Traveller also revealed the winner of its Australian ‘Restaurant of the Year Awards’ on Wednesday, with South Australian Restaurant Botanic taking out the top honour.

“There’s no question that Restaurant Botanic is a bravura performance,” Gourmet Traveller editor Joanna Hunkin said. “It combines fun and adventure with polish and poise.

“Chef Justin James doesn’t attempt perfection but rather embraces the beauty of irregularity and nature, making the most of the restaurant’s iconic location and using the garden’s bounty to create something uniquely of its place”.

Double Bay diner Margaret was named both Best New Restaurant and the NSW state winner of Restaurant of the Year.

Tasmania claimed Best Destination Dining for Van Bone in Marion Bay, while Hobart’s Fico was named the state winner.

In South Australia, Restaurant Botanic claimed both the state prize and was named Restaurant of the Year, while the creative duo behind Willunga wine bar Muni – Mug Chen and Chia Wu – were named Best New Talent.

From Victoria, Thi Le was voted Chef of the Year, while Shannon Martinez was named Restaurant Personality of Year. Tedesca Osteria was named the state winner for the second year in a row.

Gold Coast wine bar Paloma was singled out as the Wine Bar of the Year, while Essa was awarded the state prize for Queensland.

Rounding out the state winners, Pilot was named ACT’s best restaurant for a second year running, while Perth’s Lulu La Delizia took out the honour for Western Australia.
