“For a pint of cider? ”: Tourist rages over price of cider in Australia

A British tourist was left shocked by the cost of a single pint of cider at an Aussie pub.

‘Through the roof’: Inflation driving up the cost of beer

A British tourist has been left dumbfounded over the cost of a single pint of cider from an Australian pub, sharing he’s “never heard” of such a price.

Sam, who is visiting Australia from the UK, revealed he dropped £6.50, equating to $A12.80, on the alcoholic beverage in a recent TikTok video posted by his sister.

“(Sam is) not happy about the alcohol prices in Aus”, his sister captioned the video, which has amassed 69,00 views.

“Six pound 50 for a pint of cider? Cider and all?” Sam says in the video, dropping his head in his hand.

When asked by his sister about the price difference back home in the UK, Sam claims he could buy a cider for less than half from the popular pub chain Wetherspoons.

“Carling is... £2.90 from Wetherspoons,” he says.

“Why on Earth is a pint of cider – never heard of it (the Aussie brand) in my life – six pound 50?”

Fed-up Aussies flooded the comment section to side with the tourist and slam the federal government’s high alcohol taxes.

“Yer (sic) it’s sad … that’s why people ain’t going out and paying for alcohol anymore,” one person wrote.

“We ain’t happy with our prices either mate. Welcome to down under brathe (sic),” said another.

“Taxes so high here on alcohol,” another commented.

“Ha ha it doesn’t get easier lad, I paid 17.50 dollars in West Australia for a Heineken,” another remarked.

Alcohol prices set to rise next week

Tourists and locals could soon be paying more for a pint or a schooner, when the government’s twice-yearly tax hike on alcohol comes into effect next week on August 5.

Sydney Brewery marketing manager Richard Feyn said the likely increase will be yet another blow to small-scale local breweries, many of which have already gone under.

“It’s crippling for the business and it’s killer for the consumers at a time when the market is tight and everyone has got financial issues,” Mr Feyn told NCA NewsWire.

“Craft beer is way more expensive than mainstream beer. We need to put the prices up because the taxes go up and the consumer doesn’t want the price to go up.” Despite biannual increases,

Mr Feyn said the brewery had largely decided not to put prices up from August 5 and “to sit tight because the market is not allowing us to”.

“We will lose our (profit) margin and that’s another reason the small places go under.”
