First snowfalls of the season at Aussie resorts
SNOW has begun falling at Australian ski resorts - two months before they are set to open for the winter season.
SNOW has begun falling at Australian ski resorts - two months before they are set to open for the winter season.
The white flakes began falling yesterday afternoon and continued on and off throughout the night.
Perisher sales and marketing manager Richard Phillips said about 3 or 4cm had fallen at the NSW resort and it was still snowing this morning.
Besides some small unseasonal falls in January, it was the first snow of the year.
"It's made the whole place look like a winter wonderland,'' he said.
"The cloud front came through around 5pm and it seems to have come down on and off overnight.
"There were a bunch of kids here this morning making their first snowman of the season.
"It just get everyone excited.''
A spokeswoman for Mt Buller in Victoria, Gillian Dobson, estimated between 5 and 10cm of snow had fallen, with more snow showers forecast today.
"Whilst it's not unusual to see snow on the ground at this time of year, it certainly is exciting as it means the snow season is just around the corner,'' she said.
"The temperatures are dropping steadily so we're likely to see more snowfalls in the coming weeks as we ramp up in preparation for what we hope is a fantastic season.
"To have snow over the Easter long weekend is always a thrill - Easter is a busy time a Mt Buller so there are plenty of families and kids out there enjoying the white stuff on the ground, which really makes for a great buzz around the Village.''
Falls Creek spokeswoman Debbie Howie said there was a dusting of snow on the ground this morning, with temperatures hovering around -4C.
"It started to snow at about 1.30pm yesterday with heavy snowfalls at times with snow flurries overnight,'' she said.
"Its a very positive sign that winter is not far away.
"Indications are that the weather is following a relatively normal pattern with cold temperatures during autumn, dropping to freezing as we head toward winter.
"Bookings are up on last year creating a buoyant mood in the resort and snowfalls now provides extra confidence for the winter season.
"These cold temperatures are important in the lead up to winter, to get the ground cold so that follow up snowfalls in the coming months can settle and begin a base."
The ski season officially starts on the June long weekend.
