It’s the Ship 2014 music festival sets sail with Basement Jaxx and Chvrches

IF you associate cruise ships with retirees, it’s time to change your thinking. A five-day music festival is setting sail, and the line-up is seriously cool.

THERE is not much you can’t do a cruise ship these days with activities as diverse as rock climbing and ice skating on offer.

Now one has raised the bar by staging the largest ever music festival on water — offering the equivalent of a four night Big Day Out between Singapore and Australia.

Called “It’s the Ship 2014” the festival will be staged on board the newly refurbished Voyager of the Seas from November 21.

Headline acts include Basement Jaxx, CHVRCHES, Dash Berlin, Lil Jon, Alex Metric and Sasha Grey over five days and four nights.

The brainchild of the Livescape Group that hosts the Future Music Festival Asia, the cruise ship festival was inspired by the success of Australian events such as Splendour in the Grass.

“Competition for Australian music festival tickets has become increasingly fierce over the past few years with Falls Festival in Lorne selling out in a matter of minutes, UNIFY selling out in three hours, Meredith ballots all sold out on their release and punters snapping up three-day camping tickets to Splendour in the Grass in just 45-minutes,” said the Livescape Group Chief Executive Officer Muhammad Iqbal.

“Many people miss out on tickets as a result of these fast sell outs and we are seeing growing evidence of Australians travelling overseas to regions such as Asia to attend alternate world-class music events.”

Mr Iqbal said Voyager of the Seas had a 3800 passenger capacity and It’s The Ship 2014 was already proving very popular.

In addition to the on board music festival, passengers will also be able to attend a beach party hosted by Lil Jon on the tropical island of Langkawi, during the cruise.

The cruising industry has become so competitive award winning Broadway shows, water parks and “celebrity” cruises are among the attractions being offered by shipping companies this season.

Close to a million Australians are expected to take a cruise in 2014-15 following extraordinary growth in the market in the last decade.
