THEY run the fun and know all the goss on cruise ships, from the best guests at bingo and trivia to who can dance and how to make the best of a holiday at sea.

They are the always upbeat entertainment directors.

Escape asked Gemma Gregory-Jones, the entertainment director aboard P&O Cruises’ Pacific Pearl, for her insider tips on a great cruise.

“People often ask me what it takes to be a good cruise director or entertainment director as we are more often known on board these days,” Gemma says.

“It’s really simple. All of us who live and work on board are doing back-to-back cruises, but our aim is to make our passengers feel like their trip is unique and special.

“So the on-board team works very hard to make life as fun-filled as possible from the start to finish.

“But to get the best out of the cruise experience, it is good to have some inside knowledge to hit the deck running!

These are my tips:

Get up to speed

Study the daily program delivered to your cabin and tune into the on-board TV because these are the main ways to keep up with everything that’s happening on-board. You’ll be amazed at how much there is to do each day. The daily program is conveniently pocket-sized and it’s so packed with information so you won’t want to go anywhere without it — everything from big evening shows, small lounge activities, game shows to on-board parties.

Dress to impress

There are so many shows, events and parties and who wouldn’t want to look good? It’s important to plan ahead. We have a Bianco White Night party on all of our itineraries so get glammed up in your dazzling whites to party the night away. And on three-night cruises and longer there’s all the elegance of a Gatsby-themed cocktail party — the perfect time to wear 1920s style gear with some great accessories.

Don’t miss out

The lovely thing about cruising is you can do as much or as little as you fancy. So if watching a sunset in our child-free Oasis retreat with cocktail in hand sounds like heaven, it’s there and waiting for you. But if you want to jump into the action straight away, my advice is book early to enjoy cocktail making workshops, luxurious spa treatments, dinner reservations in our specialty restaurants including Luke Mangan’s Salt Grill, shore tours and behind the scenes ship tours. FOMO — fear of missing out — doesn’t need to happen to you!
