UPDATE: SNOW has started falling at Mt Buller as Victoria braces for gusty winds, possible hail showers and a top of just 17C today.

Bureau forecaster Richard Carlyon said cool air had hit the state from the southwest overnight.

He said cool winds of 40-60km/h would hit Melbourne, with gusts of up to 75km/h. Along the bay and the peninsula wind gusts could get up to 90km/h.

Rain showers will be intermittent throughout the day, with some hail possible. Southeastern suburbs are likely to be worst-affected.

Snow flakes started falling about 9am at Mt Buller and have started to settle on the ground.

Mt Buller spokeswoman Rhylla Morgan said the temperature had dropped from 2C at 6am to 0C by 9.20am.

“Snow started just before 9am, we’ve had some heavy rain and the temperature’s been dropping, we’ve got flakes falling now and it’s switching between rain and flakes,” Ms Morgan said.

She said the early dusting had left the mountain feeling wintry.

“It’s 77 days until snow season officially opens so it’s got everyone excited.”
