Leading travel search site, Skyscanner, have scoured the globe to come up with the ten best bargain destinations in 2014.
Here’s where you should be going this year.
1. Sri Lanka
Head to Sri Lanka for colonial charm on a budget. Formerly Ceylon, Sri Lanka is a great spot for surfing, Weligama being the most popular place for beginners, and you can rent a board for about $12 a day. Come sundown, grab a pint of local brew, Lion Lager, and pay less than a dollar.
2. India
Live like a Raj and experience all that this vibrant country has to offer for next-to-nothing. India has been popular with backpackers and travellers on a tight budget for years.
Head to Goa in western India, for the chance to swim with turtles, hunt for bargains in Anjuna flea market and perhaps pick up a new hobby like kitesurfing.
For just seven dollars a day you can post-up in a decent pad, feast on some of the tastiest curries and try some local feni, a traditional Goa tipple.
3. Croatia
Discover the rich history and stunning beaches of Croatia for a cheap long-haul holiday. In August, temperatures can hit as high as 40 degrees Celsius, perfect for topping up the tan or setting sail on your own yacht.
Take a chartered boat out of the coastal city of Split for a tour of Croatia’s beautiful archipelagos. There’s also plenty of tax-free shopping to be had, so go on a spending spree and be surprised by how much you save.
4. Bali, Indonesia
It’s no secret, holidaying in Bali gives you brilliant value for your hard-earned holiday spends. Visit Ubud, the cultural centre of Bali, for traditional Indonesian batik artworks and hundreds of impressive temples. Stay here and pay just eight dollars a night for a private room.
But Bali is just one island, there are many more, less touristy Indonesian hideaways to explore including the pristine island of Lombok.
5. Vietnam
A mecca for backpackers and budget-conscious travellers heading to Southeast Asia, it’s still possible to find beds for six dollars a night in Ho Chi Minh City.
Make a stop at the Reunification Palace to learn about the county’s famous war and see some impressive replica tanks. Sit on sidewalks slurping steaming bowls of phở, chicken or beef noodle soup, for one dollar.
When the afternoon rains hit, take shelter in a cafe with a pint of Bia Hoi for as little as 50 cents.
6. Honduras
While flights to Central America’s second biggest country may be a slight expense, once you’ve landed in Honduras you’ll pick up plenty of bargains and it’s a much cheaper alternative to neighbouring Costa Rica.
Despite the recent emergence of luxury, upscale resorts, much of Honduras retains its rural charm, meaning there are lots of good vacation deals to be had here.
Put it on your holiday hit list and enjoy low-cost diving trips, cheap leather goods and free tours of some of the world’s most famous Mayan ruins.
7. Fiji
Mentions of this South Pacific paradise may make you think of sandy white beaches and days spent swinging in a hammock under palm trees; but there’s something for adrenaline junkies in Fiji too.
Go white-water rafting, kayaking and skydiving and pay less than you might find at home. A skydive in Nadi starts from as little as $280. With accommodation choices ranging from five star honeymoon luxury to backpacker basic, you’ll find the perfect place to fit your budget.
8. Malaysia
Looking for a city break that won’t blow the budget? Hop over to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s capital, for cheap eats, reasonable accommodation and an interesting mix of Asian cultures. Haggle for a bargain on ‘genuine fakes’ in Chinatown, or pick of a tasty plate of roti and curry in Little India for just a couple of dollars.
Ladies, make sure you hit the swanky bars in Bangksar on a Thursday night for free drinks.
9. Turkey
Where east meets west, travel on a shoestring in Turkey.
Situated on the Mediterranean, the southwest coastline hardly ever sees a drop of rain and is best visited from May to October. Experience a Riviera that rivals France’s but at a third of the cost.
Pamphylia is the main tourist destination here and it’s possible to pick up a reasonably priced room, cheap traditional döner kebabs and explore plenty of Roman ruins to for free.
10. Cambodia
Get more bang for your buck in Cambodia and discover the enchanting temples of Angkor Wat, one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
If you’re feeling energetic at 4am, cycle out to the complex for sunrise. You can stay in Siem Reap, the nearest town to Angkor, for as little as two dollars a night.
City slickers may feel more at home in the county’s capital, Phnom Penh with its royal palaces and shopping malls. Discover Cambodia’s tragic past with a visit to the Killing Fields, easily accessible by tuktuk from Phnom Penh.
