Two-star hostel starting from $29 a night wins Australia’s best award

It might not look like much, but a two-star hostel with rooms from $29 has been crowned the best hostel in Australia.

A Cairns City backpackers accommodation house, that has a rating of just two stars and rooms starting from $29 per night, has come in as Australia’s best hostel according to a new poll.

On Tuesday, Hostelworld revealed the winners of their ‘HOSCAR’ (Hostelworld Customer Annual Ratings) Awards, honouring the best hostels from around the world.

The awards, based on 1.2 million customer reviews submitted in the past 12 months, looked at 36,000 properties in over 170 countries. Run by travel website Hostelworld, they recognise excellence in backpacker accommodation.

With the ability to house about 50 guests, Travellers Oasis in Cairns is known for its central location and relaxed tropical atmosphere.

The hostel has won the award previously, taking the top ranking in 2015/16/17 and 2018.

“We are so proud to be voted number one again,” the hostel manager Mickey told news.com.au/

“Everyone is thrilled to have received this award. It must be recognised how much love and handwork that the owners Kathy and Gabriel Thallon put into the hostels. They are here every day and their passion and drive for excellence is very inspiring.”

Mickey said what makes their hostel stand out is the passion put in to each and every detail, and bringing a real sense of Cairns to the accommodation.

“We are passionate about Cairns and its surrounding beauty,” he said.

“Kathy and Gabe have created a beautiful and vibrant boutique accommodation that creates a homely atmosphere which appeals to all travellers.

“Backpackers use Travellers Oasis as a base to explore this part of the world and to meet like-minded people. Guests always leave reviews about our friendly service and trip advice, clean facilities, comfy beds and chilled communal areas. They also love our famous Monday Aussie BBQ nights and Thursday nights Pizza night where all get to hang out together.”

The hostel has dorms as well as double, twin and single rooms all with coin-operated air conditioners. Along with two kitchens and a laundry, the property has a pool surrounded by hammocks, with shared dorm rooms starting from $29 per night and private rooms starting from $60 per night.
