These are the top low season destinations for travel in February
IF YOU’VE been saving up your annual leave until after Christmas, we’ve got good news — at February is the best time to travel.
IF YOU’VE been saving your annual leave to jet off after the Christmas period, we’ve got good news — it’s low season at many top destinations outside the December and January holiday season.
Finder.com.au has found the top spots to travel to in February. That said, huge celebrations such as Chinese New Year, Carnival and Mardi Gras tend to occur in February so if you’d prefer to avoid the crowds and peak prices, give these cities a miss or drop in outside the event dates.
1. VENICE
Even though it’s winter in the Northern hemisphere, Venice should be on your list.
Why? Purely to experience one of the biggest dates on the Venetian calendar: Carnevale.
On top of seeing insane costumes on gondolas, it also happens to be the month of Valentine’s Day. Best of all, since it’s winter, prices to the island are dirt-cheap #winning.

2. NEW ORLEANS
If you only visit New Orleans once, make it for Mardi Gras. The weather is cool and celebrations are in full swing. Often referred to as one of the best, if not the best, book early as many people have the same idea.
3. GOLD COAST
So Christmas has cleaned you out and you’re a little tight on holiday funds. The Gold Coast is a good option to soak up some sunshine. By February, school has gone back so you’ll have plenty of space on the beach. Aim to be on the beach early February though as the rains start to fall closer to March.
4. RIO DE JANEIRO
If you’re intrigued by New Orleans but prefer warmer weather try Brazil. February is all about Carnival celebrations and Brazil’s is one of the best. Bustling with samba, tanned bodies, feathers and sequins, it’s a perfect mix of party and beach.
5. NEW ZEALAND
Unwind and cross the ditch to visit wineries and experience extreme sports. Not only is the flight short, but sale fares to NZ regularly pop up. If you’re not into sports, there’s plenty of wineries to keep you busy. February is also the beginning of harvest so you can watch pickers at work.
