Summit Trail, Mt Augustus National Park WA

Want to see a mighty outback monolith that is twice as high as Uluru, but way more under the radar? Head up to Mount Augustus (Burringurrah). It's an incredible red peak that climbs to 717 metres, like its famous counterpart, the colour of the rock shifts between sunrise and sunset. Sights on this challenging walk include red sandplains, desert scrubland of wattles and the enormity of the rock itself. Desert View Trail, Pinnacles Desert - Nambung National Park WA

1.6km circuit - 1 hour

A visit to Nambung National Park (two hours from Perth) would be incomplete without a sandy walk amongst its celebrated pinnacles, which were formed by an ancient inland sea. This easy walk takes you amongst the natural sculptures, and to a look out across the desert and out to sea. Enjoy the beauty of the yellow sands in between the natural and alien-like sculptures. Bluff Knoll, Stirling Range National Park WA

Manning Gorge, Mount Barnett Station - Kimberley WA

5.6km return - 1 to 3km

Take a dip at Manning Falls and in the pools of Manning Gorge on this incredible Kimberley walk. Located halfway on the famous Gibb River Road, access is via the Mt. Barnett Roadhouse and starts at the campground. It’s a fun hike, which includes crossing the Manning River itself, as well as some rock scrambling, views across the savannah woodlands and the ranges. Castle Rock Walk, Porongurup National Park WA

4.4km return - 1 to 3 hours

It’s a steep incline of a walk to the Granite Skywalk - but the view when you do the Castle Rock Walk will be worth it. From this lookout you can see the Stirling Range, Albany at the coast, farmlands and mountains. The walk goes from the Castle Rock picnic area, so you can recharge when you come back to the bottom. Piccaninny Creek lookout walk, Bungle Bungles - Purnululu National Park WA

2.8km return - 1 hour

Explore the Bungle Bungles - one of Australia’s top natural wonders - further, with this moderately paced gorge walk amongst the rocks. Start from the Piccaninny Gorge carpark, then walk along the creek bed of Piccaninny Creek - the largest of the gorges in Purnululu) - and check out extra-special, secluded views of the Bungle Bungle Range.

Cape to Cape Track, Margaret River WA

140km - 5 to 6 days

Walk Cape to Cape with this hike, one of the Great Walks of Australia that takes in the Margaret River region. Hikers take in the coast and beaches of Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park, Injidup beach as well as its wildflowers, caves and cliffs. Bibbulmun Track, Southwestern WA

1003km - 6 to 8 weeks

Hiking near Perth? Running Kalamunda (east of Perth) all the way to Albany, the Bibbulmun Track takes in Karri forest (pictured), coastal forests, farmland, rivers, lakes, dunes, and much more. The walk is divided into sections, meaning at the end of a hard day’s hike, you can be sure to find either a campsite or a town.

Camel Trail, Chichester Ranges WA

16km return - 6 hours

Coastal Trail, Cape Le Grand National Park WA

15km one way - 8 to 9 hours

Cape Le Grand Coastal Trail gives walkers the best of the south coast, with the route winding its way past white sand beaches, heathlands and rugged granite scenery. The walk is 30 minutes from Esperance and goes between Rossiter Bay and Le Grand Beach - expect to see groups of kangaroos before you’re done!

Kalbarri Loop Trail - Kalbarri National Park WA

8km - 3 to 4 hours

Peek through Nature’s Window at the mighty Murchison River, and across the red, gorge-scarred landscape on this challenging and rocky walk. Beaches, flowing waters and cliff edges await. Try also to go see the Kalbarri Skywalk, which has two platforms 100m over the river. Go in winter, when temperatures are on the low side, as temperatures can soar in summer. Picture: Andy Vernie
