Revealed: What you'll really pay on holiday

AUSTRALIANS should expect to pay up to $7.90 for a cup of coffee and $51 for a quick phone call home at hotels in some of the most popular holiday spots around the world, a survey has revealed.
All is revealed in a new survey by travel company Expedia.com.au, which shows how the unexpected costs of everyday items can add up quickly while on holiday.
The survey compared the prices of the 10 most common items purchased at hotels at Australian travellers' favourite holiday destinations. The items included coffee, beer, phone calls and taxi rides.
Of the top 10 most popular destinations London was found to be the most expensive for Australians overall, beating Paris, Rome and New York.
Bali, Phuket, Fiji and Las Vegas fared better, being named as the cheapest cities among the popular destinations.
The survey showed that there can be a huge difference in the cost of everyday items, for example travellers looking for a caffeine hit in Bali will pay just $1.50, but those in Paris will be hit up for a whopping $7.90.
Meanwhile Las Vegas, New York and Bali were found to offer some of the cheapest bottles of beer, ranging from $3.60 to $7.25.
When it came to buying a hamburger and fries, Las Vegas and New York offered good value for money at $13.80 and $14.30 respectively. At these destinations cans of coke cost between $2.90 and $4.50.
Time to phone home? A five minute conversation to a loved one back home in Australia can cost anywhere from $5.80 in Bali to $51.45 in London. However the UK capital offers the cheapest internet deals, charging around $7.30 for an hour.
Travellers hopping in a taxi to get from the airport to their hotel can expect to pay the cheapest fare in Bali at $15.85, while those in London can expect to pay around $86.
“When you travel, every dollar counts,” Louise Crompton of Expedia.com.au said.
“Fifty dollars, for instance, would cover a return taxi fare from the airport to your hotel in Las Vegas, as well as a cup of coffee, a can of beer, a bottle of water and a can of Coca-Cola at your hotel in that city.”
The prices were obtained using an average charged by three, four and five star hotels in each city.
