This is the most simple way to instantly save hundreds on your flight

SURE, there are a few hacks out there for securing airfare bargains. But this is the simplest and most foolproof way to make it happen.

The secrets in your passport

IF YOU’RE looking to save money on flights for a holiday, you could spend hours trawling through websites to find the best deal.

You could deploy your hard-earned frequent flyer points, you could hold out hope for a last-minute sale, and you could opt for the lowest budget airline you could possibly endure.

Or, you could just pull out a calendar and time your trip right.

Analysis of flight cost data by Skyscanner.com.au has revealed the particular time of the year we see prices plunge: May.

Whether you’re travelling to somewhere nearby such as Bali, Bangkok or Auckland, or further away to Europe or the United States, May is the cheapest month in which to fly. May is all you need.

Why? May is a bit of a nothing month on the calendar. It has in-between-ish weather and no public holidays (with the exception of Queensland).

It sits between the peak travel seasons of April, June and July, which are much more popular with travellers, thanks to all the lovely long weekends and the winter school holidays.

Skyscanner also explained shoulder seasons, like May, are usually cheaper times to travel because airlines often offer good flight deals to ensure their planes are filled at this time of lesser demand. Hotels are often cheaper during these off-peak seasons too, for the same reason.

So how much can you actually save by flying in May? Skyscanner revealed to news.com.au the estimated average prices paid in May to popular destinations (departing from Sydney), the estimated saving that amounts to, and a comparison to time of the year prices tend to skyrocket: December.

Flying to Bangkok is cheaper if you do it in May (and you’ll probably see fewer Aussies over there, too).
