British tourists fuming after being charged $AU133 for just eight soft drinks at a restaurant in Greece

A woman has left a scathing review after being served a $AU133 bill for a couple of soft drinks and a milkshake while on holidays.

When reviews go badly

A group of tourists were left fuming after being charged €82 ($AU133) for just seven soft drinks and a milkshake after visiting a restaurant in Rhodes, Greece.

The startling cost is the latest in a number of stung tourists who have faced higher-than-expected food bills on holiday.

Vikki Scott was on holiday with four of her friends and family when they were charged the bill after drinking at The Gate in Old Rhodes Town.

The most expensive drink was a whopping €14 for a milkshake ($AU23).

“Went to The Gate restaurant in Old Rhodes Town for a drink,” she wrote on Facebook.

“The bill for eight soft drinks was €82 — €14 for a milkshake!

“I confronted him and all he could say was ‘thank you lady’ people like him should not be allowed to rip off tourists.

“On our way back he posed for the photo until he realised who I was then he followed me down the street telling me I couldn’t take his photo.

“Please share this especially in Rhodes sites to stop others getting ripped off!”

She then posted an image of a receipt, which was a piece of paper with each drink written on it and the price, although all in Greek.

Social media users were conflicted over who was to blame.

Some felt that it was unfair of the restaurant to charge so much.

Judith Burry commented: “All I can say is have your wits about you. Many places rip off the tourists.

“Easy money for them. I would have asked for a proper till receipt. No receipt no pay.”

Xavier Lenarts said: “We also experienced this, this is not the place to be …”

Others said she should have asked for a menu, while others suggested she had ordered large drinks, hence the prices.

Jan Manessi said: “Check the menu prices — otherwise only yourself to blame!”

Alexandros Angelopoulos said: “€14 for a milkshake is expensive. But €14 for a litre milkshake is not.”

The restaurant has just one star on TripAdvisor, with 103 “terrible” ratings out of 161.

Last month, a tourist was charged €591 ($AU955) for just six pieces of calamari while also in Greece at a beach bar in Santorini.

The US Army soldier from Brooklyn in New York took to TripAdvisor to warn other travellers of a hotspot in Greece, saying he and his friends were ripped off to the tune of $AU1350 total for a light beachside lunch in Mykonos.

The soldier detailed his trip to DK Oyster in a terse, blistering review after getting the staggering bill for six plates of calamari, three Caesar salads, six beers, two waters and a glass of tomato juice.

The unsatisfied soldier claims staffers at the restaurant on the southern end of the Greek island near Platis Yialos Beach refused to provide a menu with prices before he and his friends placed their orders, including the calamari.

According to the New York Post, who reached out to the restaurant for comment, a representative for DK Oyster Cafe confirmed that the prices were indeed correct.

“Although we feel that they reflect the level of our efforts, care and the quality of the food served in one of the world’s most coveted beaches, we can sympathise with an unsatisfied customer,” DK Oyster said in a statement.
