PASSENGERS have been warned to brace for delay at Sydney Airport as fierce weather continues to wreak havoc.

Airport spokeswoman Laura Stevens said previous reports that it has been forced to shut are incorrect.

“Sydney Airport is not closed,” Ms Stevens said. “The airport remains open and operations continue.”

However, there have been some dramas, and the conditions have resulted in delays.

“Some international flights have been diverted and there are domestic delays of up to 60 minutes. Passengers are advised to check with their airlines for their latest flight details.

“We’re also advising passengers to allow plenty of time to get to and from the airport, with weather related traffic and public transport issues around Sydney.”

She said all is being done to assist passengers.

“We’ve allocated additional resources to ensure ongoing operations, manage weather related issues, assist passengers and keep people informed.”

Passengers can stay updated via Sydney Airport’s Twitter page or the airlines’ accounts. Many flyers have already taken to the social media site to share their situations and find out when they will be able to fly.

Traveller Adriane Medeiros endured a four-hour delay Tweeted about “minor” flooding on-board a Qantas plane.

Many others have been stuck.

Virgin Australia told news.com.au: “We are doing everything possible to ensure a smooth travel experience including proactively contacting guests whose flights have been affected by adverse weather in New South Wales.

“We advise guests to allow extra travel time getting to the airport and to check the Flight Status page on our website for up to date information. We are working as quickly as possible to have guests on their way and appreciate everyone’s patience during these trying weather conditions.”
