Qatar Airways cleans up at the World Travel Awards
Qatar Airways has won yet another reputable award with the Middle Eastern carrier beating its rivals to take out the category.
Qatar Airways has won yet another reputable award recognising it as the ‘World’s Leading Airline 2024’ by the World Travel Awards.
The Doha-based airline was voted in the category alongside 19 other heavyweights including direct rivals Emirates and Etihad, as well as Air New Zealand, British Airways, Singapore Airlines and Turkish Airlines which recently made its debut in Australia.
World Travel Awards, now in its 31st year, supports, promotes and develops the global travel and tourism industry by identifying and rewarding excellence and “inspiring its practitioners to continually raise the standards of their product and service offering”.
It’s not the first time Qatar Airways won the prestigious leading airline award, having also won it in 2022 and 2023.
The airline also cleaned up several other awards including world’s leading business class and lounge and was recognised at the world’s leading airline to the Middle East.
Meanwhile, Etihad won the world’s leading economy class and Emirates took home the award for having the leading first class cabin.
World’s leading airline for premium class went to Qantas.
Earlier this year, Qatar was named the World’s Best Airline for 2024, adding to its long-list of awards.
It reclaimed the title in the annual Skytrax’s World Airline Awards dubbed “the Oscars of the aviation industry”, returning to the top for an unprecedented eighth time.
Qatar, a 5-star carrier, also received three other awards – World’s Best Business Class, World’s Best Business Class Airline Lounge and Best Airline in the Middle East.
It’s also become the first aviation group to win Best Airline, Best Airport and Best Airport Shopping, in the same year in Skytrax history.
Meanwhile, the Doha-based airline announced this week it will resume daily flights to Canberra.
“The nation’s capital, the political heart of Australia, rightly expects to be served by a range of international airlines, and I am proud that we are able to play our part in that,” Qatar Airways Group CEO, engineer Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, said.
“Whether travelling for business, government services or leisure, our commitment to Australia, and to Canberra, is one that we know will bring much needed healthy competition to the market and greater choice for passengers.”
The daily flights to Canberra will operate via Melbourne to the airline’s hub, Hamad International Airport, in Doha.
The flights, commencing in December 2025, will be operated by Boeing 777 aircraft.
The airline has also partnered with Virgin Australia, giving Aussies more options for international travel.
