Jetstar crowned Best Low-Cost Airline in Australia at Skytrax Awards 2022
It may come as a surprise to some, but this Aussie low-cost airline has managed to take out a winning title at the world’s airline awards.
Air Asia has done it again.
For the 13th year in a row, it has been crowned the world’s best budget airline at the Skytrax Awards, with an Aussie airline also nabbing a spot in the top 20.
The Malaysian low-cost airline, headquartered near Kuala Lumpur, faced a difficult past few years triggered by Covid-19, but the company triumphed and went on to nab the reputable title for 2022.
“Finally, I see blue skies ahead once again,” Capital A CEO Tony Fernandes said in a statement. “We have survived, we have rebuilt and we are recovering to deliver greater value and choice than ever before.”
Edward Plaisted, CEO of Skytrax, said the airline has “redefined” low-cost air travel in Asia and despite the recent post-pandemic challenges, it continues to be a “firm favourite” with customers.

“Winning the award for the World’s Best Low Cost Airline and an extraordinary 13th time is a fantastic achievement, and we congratulate all the members of the AirAsia family on this momentous occasion,” Mr Plaisted said.
The airline took out the top spot ahead of competitors including Singapore’s Scoot, which came second and Southwest Airlines and Ryanair, which came third and fourth respectively.
Australian airline Jetstar Airways also managed to nab a spot in the top 20. It came ninth and was also voted the Best Low-Cost Airline in Australia / Pacific 2022.
The Skytrax awards were decided by a survey of 14.3 million customers of over 100 nationalities who reviewed more than 300 airlines from September 2021 to August 2022.
However, just a month after the review period in September this year, Jetstar faced troubling times with the airline plagued with complaints.
At least 4000 passengers had been impacted by numerous engineering issues, which had led to a raft of flight cancellations since the start of September.
A Jetstar spokesman apologised for the inconvenience the disruptions caused at the time.
The airline, however, has continued to make an impression in aviation having also been voted Best Low-Cost Airline for 2021 in the Asia-Pacific region by AirlineRatings.com in its annual Airline Excellence Awards.
The airline group – made up of Jetstar, Jetstar Asia, and Jetstar Japan – is part of the Qantas Group and since 2003 has grown dramatically across Australia, New Zealand, Asia, and Japan.
Jetstar Airways recently appointed Stephanie Tully as its new chief executive ahead of Gareth Evans’ impending departure.
