If you’ve been weighing up where to book an overseas trip this year that won’t completely break the bank, an Aussie airline may have the answer.

Budget carrier Jetstar has announced that it’ll be launching free flights out of Japan, meaning you’ll just have to pay for the first leg over.

The popular ‘Return for Free’ sale, which the airline has run as part of their international travel promotion previously, means that passengers from most major ports along the east coast can return from Tokyo or Osaka without having to pay for the fare home.

The sale, which kicks off today for just 72 hours, requires travellers to book an outbound fare from either Brisbane, Cairns or Sydney and on select dates, can return for free from either Tokyo or Osaka.

Some of the cheaper fares start from $337 from Cairns to Osaka one-way where a free return flight is available, or Brisbane to Osaka (Kansai) from just $476.

While the travel dates will vary per route, there are opportunities to book a free return journey anywhere from late February until early December 2024.

The launch of the sale comes weeks after the airline announced a multimillion-dollar upgrade to its fleet that will transform customers in-flight experience.

The upgrade of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet will overhaul its economy and business class cabins with more business class seats, on-board Wi-Fi and better crew rest areas to allow them to fly greater distances.

The airline pointed to growing demand for premium services has meant the business class cabin will double from 21 to 44 seats.

However, among the major updates, the airline is scrapping its in-flight entertainment screens.

All economy and business seats will be replaced with ergonomic designs by RECARO Aircraft Seating featuring seat back smartphone and tablet holders, a power outlet to keep devices charged and six-way headrests for head and neck support.

This means that for the first time ever, Jetstar customers will also get access to wi-fi on-board their flight, allowing them to access streaming content and browse the internet.
