Flight question Bachelor star and pilot always gets asked
Sydney pilot and The Bachelor Australia star Jimmy Nicholson has revealed the one question he always gets asked “without fail”.
Sydney pilot and The Bachelor Australiastar Jimmy Nicholson has revealed the one question he always gets asked when it comes to the aviation industry.
“Without fail, the most popular question I get asked is about turbulence. What is turbulence? Is it gonna kill me? I’m scared of turbulence. Don’t worry about it,” he said in a TikTok that has been viewed almost a million times.
Jimmy, who tied the knot to fellow Bachelor contestant Holly Kingston this week, helped break it down for his followers.
“Let’s give you an easy explanation. When we drive a car on a road, on a freeway, it’s smooth, there’s no bumps. There’s a smooth ride. When you go off the freeway onto a road, maybe a dirt road, there’s potholes. What happens? It gets bumpy,” he explained.
“It’s not comfortable for you or me. That’s essentially what turbulence is, you’re driving over potholes.
“The car will not fall through the pothole. You’re going to slow the car down and you’re gonna go over the bumps.”
Jimmy said most passengers probably think pilots are freaking out — but that’s definitely not the case.
“What do we do as pilots is we slow the aircraft down and we either climb or descend or we sit about a little bit,” he said.
“Pilots up the front are very, very chilled. All we are caring about is our coffee being spilt.”
Off the back of his viral clip, he shared another detailing where on the aircraft it’s best to sit if you “hate” turbulence.
“If you’re at the back, it’s gonna be a little bit more bumpy. Picture this. The rear of the aircraft will swing more, the front will swing less,” he explained.
“So if you are scared of flying or feel sick when you experience turbulence, sit up the front of the aircraft – that would be my hot tip.”
The pilot reassured nervous flyers the aircraft will “not fall out of the sky”, adding it’s an “annoying thing” that “hopefully will only last a few minutes”.
He suggested that if you do feel sick when you’re flying, look for a visual reference.
“So look outside the window and stare at the horizon and hopefully it will help you as well,” he said.
“Remember, you won’t be in turbulence for long. We will either climb, descend, or try and get you out of the turbulence. So if anything, it’ll be a couple of minutes and it’s annoying.
“But don’t worry, we’re not stressed about it.”
Jimmy’s clips seemed to have reassured his followers, with many thanking him for his tips.
“Thank you so much! I always think it’s just going to drop out the sky,” one person wrote.
Another suggested: “With turbulence I usually close my eyes and pretend we’re on the road,” while a third added: “Thank you. Using this so I can convince my boyfriend we need to always travel first class.”
The former model-turned-airline pilot was temporarily stood down in 2020 due to the global pandemic, but he was back at the following year
He put his free time to good use in 2020 by signing up to become a volunteer Surf Lifesaver at Coogee Beach.
Meanwhile, earlier this week Jimmy and his fiance Holly tied the knot, two years after they fell in love on national television.
Jimmy was The Bachelor for the show’s ninth season back in 2021, eventually choosing Holly as his winner – and the pair have been together ever since.
