‘Cascading effect’: Thick fog causing to delays to arrivals at Melbourne Airport could impact departures

Thick fog causing delays to arrivals at a busy airport could also cause delays to departures, as the airport is forced to limit flights.

Airports in chaos following global IT outage

Passengers due to arrive at Melbourne Airport are experiencing delays of up to 40 minutes as heavy fog blankets the city.

A Melbourne Airport spokesman confirmed the morning fog causing delays of up to 30 to 40 minutes for arrivals will have a “cascading effect” on departing flights on Tuesday.

The airport has been placed into a “low visibility operation”, which means only a limited number of aircrafts are able to use the runways.

Scheduled flights to Mildura, Sydney and King Island have been delayed and another two flights scheduled to depart for Sydney shortly after 9am have been cancelled.

The spokesman said while it is difficult to establish the extent of possible disruptions, aircraft “holding patterns” will likely continue if the fog remains.
