Four Eyes fashion: What you should pack for a New Zealand snow holiday
TRYING to pack for a snow getaway? These fashion gurus have got you sorted revealing the latest and hippest trends this winter.
DON’T know what to wear this winter? We’ve got you sorted.
Kiwi fashion bloggers, Danny Simmons, Chin Tay, Alex Blanco and Mino Kim of Four Eyes, reveal what they think is trendy this snow season and how to look hip in New Zealand.
1) What’s New Zealand fashion scene?
Danny: Dark.
Chin: Understated.
Mino: Unique.
Alex: Anything goes.
2) Do you think Kiwis dress better in summer or winter?
Alex: Winter is more interesting because of the use of layers in outfits — there are more combinations of fabrics, prints and textures possible.
Danny: I think probably in winter. New Zealand doesn’t generally do the glam summery looks you might find in say Sydney, but we’re very good at layering which you can only really do in the cooler months.
Chin: Definitely winter. Having to layer allows you more interesting mixes of colour and texture.
Mino: I agree that winter is maybe more interesting but summer also allows you to play with colour and lighter fabrics.
3) What’s your one must-have item for winter?
Danny: Definitely a good pair of gloves. Every year I regret not finding a pair after realising my fingers are freezing, again.
Chin: A light-coloured, long coat.
Alex: A good quality pair of leather boots.
Mino: And a nice hat. Perfect for rainy days!
4) What’s must you pack for the snowfields in NZ?
Danny: A great après-ski outfit to change into after the sun goes down.
Chin: An oversized, bulky-knit scarf.
Alex: An oversized, warm, woolley sweater you can wear once you are done with the days activities.
Mino: Some really cool snow goggles because eyewear always tops off a look.
5) What should everyone avoid wearing this winter?
Danny: Too much black. I’m guilty myself but really, why are we making winter even less colourful?
Chin: Ugg boots.
Alex: Agree! Ugg boots!
Mino: Yep Ugg boots!
7) Fluro colour or monotone on the ski fields?
Danny: I’m going with fluoro! I wear so much monochrome day to day I reckon the skifields are a great place to break out some 90s neon.
Chin: Monochrome because if I fall I don’t need everyone looking at me.
Alex: That’s a tough one. I like both so switch on alternate days. An all white outfit would be pretty cool though.
Mino: I love colour so I will have to go with the fluoro.
6) If you were taking a week off to ski/snowboard, would you wear a different outfit each day? Or would you accessorise differently each day?
Danny: Haha that would be nice, but I have a hard enough time finding different things to wear on regular days.
I think trying to create a different outfit every day on the slopes might drive me insane. Accessorising differently each day might be a good compromise though.
Chin: Accessorising differently each day would be the easier option.
Alex: If luggage wasn’t an issue, than wearing different things on different days would be great. Sometimes you feel like a bit of colour and sometimes, all black looks cool with maybe some coloured accessories.
Mino: Definitely a change every day. I know it’s about the skiing but I would get bored wearing the same outfit every day.
7) Are you ever too young to dress stylishly?
Danny: Nope. Nor too old.
Chin: Absolutely not. In fact you have to start young.
Alex: Definitely not.
Mino: No — start them young I say.
8) An Australian who has never been to NZ is coming over to ski. They’ve got no idea on what to wear, how to fit in, how to stand out. What would you tell them?
Danny: I’d say just wear whatever you’d be comfortable wearing on an Australian ski field. If that means standing out, awesome.
Chin: My advice is always to wear whatever you want.
Alex: Agree with the guys above. New Zealand is pretty laid back so anything goes.
Mino: I think if you like it, standing out is good — colourful is the way to go and skiing is fun so why not reflect that in your outfit.
9) Accessories are huge on the snow fields. What’s in, what’s out and what’s necessary?
Danny: They’re probably all necessary I’d say. As fabulous as a wide brim hat may look on the slopes, a beanie is probably still the more practical option.
Chin: Beanies will never go out. They’re warm, practical and come in all shapes and sizes.
Alex: I am personally not a fan of beanies so would probably go for maybe a jacket with a fur trimmed hood — love them.
Mino: I would go for a hood. Oh, or a fluffy hat.
10) What’s the best thing about life right now?
Danny: Every so often I remember that I’m a grown up and can do what I want. That’s pretty cool.
Chin: Editing the photos we took at MBFWA this month. I’m such a nerd.
Alex: There is always something in the pipeline to look forward to and for us, a trip to Europe is being discussed.
Mino: We are all working hard and playing hard which is the only way to be in my opinion. Go hard or go home.
