Heaps of people are Googling how to leave America
AS DONALD Trump becomes the next US President, the Canadian immigration website crashed and Americans Googled how to move to Australia.
WITH Donald Trump taking victory, and while many joked about moving to Canada pending the outcome of the election, it seems a few of them were actually serious.
Shortly after 3pm today, Canada’s official immigration website crashed. While some clearly thought it was a joke, others wondered if Canada took a leaf out of Mr Trump’s book by putting up a “wall” to stop a wave of immigration from south of the border. Either way, news.com.au can confirm the website is displaying a “server error”. Perhaps they were following the lead of Girls star Lena Dunham, when she sensationally promised to move to Vancouver if Mr Trump got elected. “I know a lot of people have been threatening to do this, but I really will,” the 29-year-old said in April. “I know a lovely place in Vancouver, and I can get my work done from there.” It’s not just Canada who could be preparing for a deluge of Americans. Google Trends shows the searches “Move to Australia” and “Move to New Zealand” have spiked over the past few hours. For Australia, most inquiries are coming from Colorado, Kentucky, Tennessee, Washington and Virginia. For New Zealand, most searches are originating in Oregon, Colorado, Washington, Missouri and Virginia. Clearly, there’s a bit of a theme here. Since Colorado, Washington and Virginia all popped up twice, and they all voted for Hillary Clinton, we’re guessing those plotting their escape are Democrats. Ms Clinton supporters will probably fit in well in Australia. She proposed more thorough background checks for gun owners; we haven’t had a mass-shooting since 1996. She tried to smash through the glass ceiling as the first female presidential candidate; we’ve had a female prime minister who arguably delivered one of the best feminist speeches in modern history. Ms Clinton believes in protecting vulnerable members of society; we have Medicare and paid parental leave. Realistically, it’s easy for Americans to come to Australia. They can apply online for an Electronic Travel Authority, which allows multiple entries to Australia over 12 months, granting entry for three months at a time. If they’re aged between 18 and 30, they can apply for a Working Holiday visa. According to the border.gov.au website, there are also plenty of options if they have “skills Australia needs” or are interested in “regional employment”.
