IF YOU’RE looking for a night to remember on your next trip, steer clear of London and New York.

Hamburg has been voted the best city in the world for a night out, beating both the UK capital and Berlin, according to a new survey.

More than 4000 people revealed what they looked for in a night out and Germany’s second city came top for openness and friendliness and ease of getting around.

The study, carried out by online booking service HostelWorld, surveyed residents of 41 cities across 27 countries.

“We scored a ‘night out’ in global cities based on five key factors,” Marek Mossakowski, Global Head of Brand at Hostelworld, told Sun Online Travel.

“We looked at the overall quality of things to do, the openness of the locals, how safe people feel, getting around the city, and affordability.”

Respondents said Hamburg benefited from a small city centre and good transport links making it easy for locals and tourists to get around at night.

“Hamburg scored highly across the board, but particularly well when looking at how easy it is to travel around the city and how open the locals are, which includes how easy it is to meet new people and how welcoming the residents are to tourists,” Mr Mossakowski said.

Hamburg came joint second with Copenhagen in the quality of night-life category.

The Danish capital came second overall in the survey with its biggest plus points being that it is seen as a safe place to party and its transport system is considered one of the most efficient in the world.

Unfortunately, like many Scandinavian cities, its high prices let Copenhagen down.

In third place was Berlin, the capital of Germany.

It boasts some of the best nightclubs in the world — if you can get in — and offers a cheap night out.

Dublin, famed for its night-life, scored highly across all categories and was ranked fourth.

It only missed out on the top three because of the locals not being satisfied with the cost of food, drink and entertainment.

Major cities like Sydney, Melbourne and London missed out on a spot in the top 10.

New York just made it to 10th place.

It was ranked highly for food, drink and fun, as well as getting around, but not so well for friendliness, safety, and well below average for affordability.

Berlin, home to the famous Berghain nightclub (pictured), came in third.

“The results of this study have been fascinating, especially the performance of smaller cities,” Mr Mossakowski said.

“We know young travellers are increasingly venturing off the beaten track to uncover unique experiences, and this study demonstrates this.”
