Millennial backpackers fined $1515 and kicked out of Venice for making coffee by Rialto Bridge

A quick break has ended up with a hefty fine and being kicked off the island of Venice for two backpackers wanting a caffeine fix.

Two tourists who decided to make coffee on the steps of a historic bridge in Venice were slapped with a $1515 fine for their antics.

And after being handed the hefty fee, the millennial backpackers were also kicked out of the city.

The two German travellers, aged 32 and 35, were seen at the foot of the Rialto Bridge on Friday according to the BBC.

The couple had apparently decided to make coffee using a travel cooker right by the historic landmark, which had recently gone through restorations.

They were spotted by passers-by, who reported them to the police.

The man was handed a €650 ($A1036) fine while the woman was given a €300 ($A480) fine according to The Independent, under the city’s regulations.

Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro said of the news: “Venice must be respected and those impolite people who come here and do what they want must understand that. Thanks to the local police, they will be sanctioned and removed.”

Due to the huge number of tourists who visit Venice each year, there has been an increasing backlash against over-tourism in the city.

As a result, the city has introduced a number of rules to try and police bad behaviour by tourists.

These are known as “Daspo”, and can include fines as well as bans.

Just last month, a female Canadian tourist was slapped with a €250 ($A400) fine after sunbathing in her bikini in public at Venice’s Papadopoli Gardens, just steps from Piazzale Roma.

And last year, the city said it would introduce fines to tourists who are sitting or lying on the ground.

The city is also trying to curb the number of tourists through a new tourist tax.
