Paris’ widespread protests have prompted fresh warnings for Australians seeking a European summer.

Australian travellers seeking a European summer have been given a fresh security warning amid Paris’ widespread protests.

The advice comes as thousands of demonstrators protest across France against Emmanuel Macron changing the state pension age from 62 to 64 without a parliamentary vote.

More than 740,000 people have taken to the streets across the country in demonstrations that spiralled into violence in some cities.

Protesters in the capital have set heaped piles of rubbish on fire and thrown projectiles at police who responded with tear gas.

General Manager of Western Europe, Intrepid Travel, Florencia Allo Moreno, said Australians with plans to travel to Paris should be prepared for disruption.

Flights and public transport are being heavily affected by the protests, she added.

“At the moment, Smart Traveller isn’t advising against travelling to France, but says Aussies should exercise caution and avoid demonstration areas,” Ms Moreno said.

This means those planning to travel to France do not need to cancel their trip.

“However, Smart Traveller advises Aussies to avoid all demonstrations and areas with significant police activity, monitor the media and follow the advice of local authorities,” Ms Moreno said.

She went on to say Australians could ensure their stay in Paris is as smooth as possible if they stay aware of protest locations.

“Our advice for tourists to stay safe in Paris and France is to avoid the areas where protests and demonstrations are taking place, as much as possible,” she said.

“It’s also important for travellers to stay on top of the news. If you’ve booked with a tour operator or travel agency, always reach out to them with any questions or doubts pre-trip.”

The Australian government does not advise against travelling to France but warns those in the country to exercise a high degree of caution.

“Ongoing protests and strikes are occurring across France, including Paris. Recent protests and strikes have led to widespread disruptions to travel services (including road, train and air travel),” the Smartraveller website read.

“Some recent demonstrations have led to destruction of private property, burning of garbage in the streets and unsafe use of fireworks.

“In some of these incidents, clashes with police occurred resulting in the use of tear gas and water cannon. Avoid all demonstrations and areas with significant police activity. Monitor the media and follow the advice of local authorities.”
